A Break in the Weather
some clouds, a little rain, and a lot of refreshed green in the forest
Hello friends — welcome back to the forest.
A few evenings ago, it rained. I heard the pitter patter on the roof and my feet quickly took me outside to the deck; to feel the rain on my skin, to smell the freshness in the air. It showered on and off through the rest of that night and it was a much-needed little break. Hopefully, there is more to come, but for now, let’s wander through a refreshing green wonderland that awaited us the morning after.
Let’s stand here for a moment, before we begin our exploration, and take a few deep breaths — imagine it is that post-rain mountain forest air filling your lungs. See the lushness of the foliage, slowly overtaking a trail that is seeing little use of late — notice how everything, including us, has been reinvigorated by a little rain.
The trail is barely a trail, and raindrops glisten and sparkle. To our left, to our right, there is something to notice, something to treasure, something to capture.
Each plant we encounter grows leaves of a different texture, and some catch and hold the raindrops exquisitely. As we pass by one, it almost looks like the leaves are coated in frost with the way they glitter.
We reach the other side of the dense section of greenery and find ourselves with a view — the lake perfectly calm and mirroring the surrounding landscape — breathtaking and calming in equal measure.
We continue meandering along the quiet lake’s edge, a small family of geese takes to the water, and briefly, so briefly, we spot the head of a beaver above the water, before it disappears into its lodge beneath the water’s surface.
We duck under the low canopy, enjoy the gentle curve of a fern, and admire the gnarled trees standing tall.
The surrounding foliage slowly changes. We are immersed in the long marshy grass now and it’s filled with tiny treasures — hundreds of raindrops light up like tiny stars amongst the green strands.
The birds chirp and dart from tree to tree around us. One we spot, carrying a mouthful for her young, likely hidden nearby and waiting for their next meal.
Yellow and green blend and flow together as we gaze out across the marsh, highlighted by the sun as it peeks out from behind a passing cloud.
Eventually, we find ourselves surrounded by trees once again. The mosquitos are here too, just waiting for unsuspecting prey such as us to wander through their domain. But it’s too pretty to be much bothered and we pause under the green canopy once more before we begin the journey home once again.
Wishing you all a lovely Sunday and week ahead.
Until next time,
♡ Whitney
I was going to comment on how dense this seemed. At the same time, I got to the point in which you use precisely that word. Your photographs give me the feeling that this was a powerful and uplifting type of dense rather than one that pushes you down. Beautiful as always.
Gentle walk. Thanks.
