Wandering in the Spring Rains

the forest soaks in the needed rains of spring

Blustery winds, periods of rain, and dark clouds cover the sky. Temperatures remain cool during the spring rains; a reminder that winter is not long in the past, though the snow is finally gone from even the shadiest nooks and crannies of the forest.

The rain keeps people indoors; cozy, warm, dry. It leaves the forest wandering to me and it is extraordinarily quiet and peaceful as I stand upon an expanse of moss.

The newly unfurled leaves capture raindrops, buds sparkle, stalled halfway open; waiting for the warmth of the spring sun to return.

Last year’s fallen leaves are slowly dissolving into the soil, into the earth, to nourish the plants and life that are inching their way into the world. More skunk cabbages emerge through the detritus, and the feathery leaves of wild bleeding heart (I think), capture and cradle perfect drops of rain.

Tiers of cedar boughs glisten and glimmer, releasing their droplets to the earth, and down the back of my neck, at the slightest touch. And hidden deep in a damp hillside, new life soaks in moisture and glows vibrantly green.
