Yesterday dawned dark and moody; the weather service forecasted that snow was coming. The air was crisp — it would be my favourite type of snow; swirling, light, tiny flakes. A crystallized white powder to top the trees and mountains.
Up the hill and back onto familiar trails; trails that are slowly disappearing into the collecting snow. Today would have been better, more majestic and picturesque, to see all the trees covered in white, but there is something equally special about being out when it just begins, to stand amidst the swirling snowfall and watch it begin to collect.
The high bluff we visited provided a wide open view of an endless grey sea, the mountains hidden behind thick layers of grey snow clouds made the valley seem a little less enclosed in a surprising way.
The snowflakes so small, they barely show, but the branches and needles and tall treetops slowly collect the white drifts.
Deeper into the woods, the snow is slower to filter through — sprigs of green moss wave tiny tendrils — it will take a little longer, but soon they too, will disappear underneath.
I hope the snow is here to stay for the winter; the holidays are fast approaching and a white wonderland is always an important part of this time for me. But the temperatures hover in the in-between; we could get rain or snow during such conditions.
But if the snow lingers, and the sun peeks out as it’s tentatively forecasted to tomorrow, the forest will truly sparkle and glitter — and that would be a real treat.
