Chasing Raindrops and Wildflowers
my favourite little meadow, blooming wildflowers, and a day in the rain
Friday dawned and I lay in bed, listening to the rain’s staccato rhythm on the roof above my head. It was my birthday and I knew exactly how I would spend its first few hours — out in the rain; chasing raindrops and wildflowers.
Open meadows are not easy to find in this valley between the mountains; open fields of wildflowers can be found at the top — an expensive ticket and a few chairlift rides away.
And while this little treasure that I’ve found may have originally been man-made, an old gravel pit long abandoned, it has flourished in the years since it has been left alone. It’s now home to dozens of different wildflower varieties, lush grasses, and of course, birds.
In this season of spring, the wildflowers are still only just beginning — but through the following months, this spot is one to return to often, and it will look different each time.
The whites; stark and bright against the moody backdrop of a rainy day. Drooping slightly under the weight of the rain, these delicate flowers are in their prime right now — but won’t last much longer.
Another variety is just beginning its blossoming; buds ready to burst open, with just a few that already have.
Then there is this small ground plant boasting beautiful blue-purple blooms, which caught my eye when I first entered the meadow.
Robins chirp and sing constantly from the surrounding trees, darting through the grass and perching on old branches; pausing only for a moment because it’s spring and there is much to be done.
Traversing the meadow brings me back into the trees; to follow serpentine paths through the woodland; stopping again and again to take in the smells and sounds and sights.
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.
Until we meet again in the forest,
♡ Whitney
