The morning dawned moody and grey — perfect conditions for a few hours along a flowing river, to watch birds soar and listen to the gentle patter of raindrops on leaves.
The sound of water rushing covers the almost inescapable hum of a nearby highway, bringing a deeper feeling of tranquility to the forest.
As I sit on the banks of the river, I look up and catch an osprey soaring high above, a fish in its talons, searching for a safe spot to enjoy its freshly caught lunch.
I continue my slow wander along the river, captivated and entranced with how each branch, leaf, and even a spider’s web catch the raindrops perfectly.
The last of the summer wildflowers, these beautiful purple asters, are still vibrant amongst the foliage — though fall is not far off now, and they will likely fade soon.
As I leave the river, I am drawn to the misty hillside, and I watch as the clouds allow peeks of the trees hidden beneath. Every few minutes, the landscape shifts, trees disappearing, and other ridges poking through.
I can only hope we get more of these moody, rainy conditions that I love — autumn used to offer this in abundance, but our weather no longer follows our old patterns. But when these special days come along, you know where I’ll be heading.
